Healthcare Assistant - PICC SERVICE

Job summary

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) will work within the specialist nurse led PICC & Vascular Access Service to provide a high standard of care to patients who require or have a PICC or Midline.

After training, the job holder will be expected to work autonomously in some aspects of patient care, referring to the CNS when necessary. The role includes assisting with line insertions, aftercare and troubleshooting of lines, undertaking bloods and swabs for patients and some staff training.

The HCA will also be expected to undertake administrative tasks including preparing referrals, overseeing stock, updating computer records, calling patients, and answering general enquiries.

The job is full time (37.5 hours pw), currently weekdays only, 8 am - 4 pm.

Main duties of the job

Assisting with line insertions for inpatients and outpatients, providing aftercare and troubleshooting of lines, undertaking bloods and swabs for patients and some staff training. Training will be given.

Undertaking administrative tasks including preparing referrals, overseeing stock, updating computer records, calling patients, and answering general enquiries.

Maintain the dignity and respect of patients.

Support and reassure patients undergoing a clinical procedure.

Undertake equipment safety checks.

After training, visit patients on different wards to undertake line management.

Assist with the transferring of patients using appropriate manual handling.

Undertake dressing changes, checking for complications (after completion of competencies)

Undertake line flushes, checking for complications (after completion of competencies)

Taking blood tests via PICC (after completion of competencies and subject to strict criteria)

Confirm bookings and forward patient information

Scan patient documents

Updating patient information to databases

Completing audits

Accurately taking and relaying information

Routine follow up calls to patients and taking patient queries.

Overseeing stock orders, undertake some orders, unpacking stores, stock and expiry date checks.
