Here is an exciting opportunity, we are hiring for MRI Superintendent Radiographer.
You will lead the delivery of a safe, efficient and high-quality MRI service across the sites served by the Basildon Hospital Radiology department. Acting as the site MR Responsible Person, they will provide expert clinical leadership, oversee MRI safety governance in partnership with MR Safety Experts and Officers, and ensure compliance with MR Local Rules and national standards.
The role combines strategic and operational management with advanced clinical practice, including protocol optimisation, complex case supervision and staff training. You will drive service development, capacity planning, equipment lifecycle management and quality improvement, while fostering a culture of patient safety, innovation and continuous professional development within the MRI team.
Main duties of the job
Lead the MRI service across Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, acting as the MR Responsible Person and ensuring compliance with MR Local Rules and national safety standards. Provide strategic and operational leadership, including capacity planning to meet DM01 targets, managing extended day/weekend rotas, and integrating Community Diagnostic Centre and mobile solutions. Maintain advanced clinical practice for complex case supervision, protocol optimisation and troubleshooting. Oversee MRI safety governance, implant/device screening, Level-1 and Level-2 safety training, and emergency preparedness for quench, fire and cardiac arrest scenarios. Manage MRI equipment lifecycle, including procurement, acceptance testing, QA and coil management. Lead governance for gadolinium-based contrast agents and associated risk management. Recruit, appraise and develop MRI staff, deliver training packages, and ensure compliance with mandatory training. Drive service improvement, protocol standardisation and innovation through collaboration with radiologists, physicists and vendors.

- Leadership & Service Management: Provide expert leadership for MRI services, represent the modality at governance and performance meetings, and contribute to strategic planning.
- Safety & Governance: Maintain MRI safety governance, lead Level1 and Level2 MR safety training, oversee implant/device screening, and ensure emergency preparedness for quench, fire and cardiac arrest scenarios. Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
- Clinical Expertise: Deliver advanced MRI practice, vet referrals, supervise complex cases, and uphold best evidencebased protocols.
- Equipment & QA: Manage MRI equipment lifecycle, including procurement, acceptance testing, routine QA and coil management. Standardise protocols across all scanners.
- Capacity & Performance: Plan and monitor MRI capacity to meet DM01 targets, manage extended day/weekend rotas, and integrate Community Diagnostic Centre and mobile solutions. Report KPIs such as waiting times, turnaround and patient experience.
- Contrast & Risk Management: Lead governance for gadoliniumbased contrast agents, including screening, administration and adverse event audits.
- Education & Staff Development: Recruit, appraise and develop MRI staff, deliver training packages, and maintain compliance with mandatory training.
- Innovation & Research: Collaborate on protocol development, service improvement and research projects, supporting implementation of new technologies.
