Trainee Cardiothoracic Surgical Care Practitioner

Job summary

A new opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) at the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre (ECTC). Applicants should be keen to learn and dedicated to developing themselves as well as the future SCP team.

MSc in Surgical Care Practice in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University

The successful candidate will be undertaking the three year Masters level SCP training at ARU funded jointly by the Trust and Health Education East of England.

The SCP team are led by a committed consultant cardiothoracic surgeon who is passionate about expanding and developing the role within the centre, delivering evidence based care, in an environment which encourages personal and professional development. The Trust is led by one of the most inspiring leaders in healthcare and strives to be an excellent hospital providing high quality, safe care for our community.

The successful candidate will join an already established cohesive group of healthcare professionals with foundations of teamwork, trust and communication. Training will be supported by a mentor surgeon and SCP. Working within agreed boundaries and meeting clearly defined competencies, the SCP works autonomously as well as within a team structure and should be able to demonstrate good interpersonal and mediation skills in order to work with the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To harvest conduit suitable for coronary artery bypass operations and ensure appropriate wound closure within the required time frame.

2. To act as first or second assistant to the operating surgeon during cardiothoracic surgery procedures.

3. Review patients on behalf of the consultant surgeons in the out-patient department.

4. To assist the surgical team with the assessment and preparation of the pre-operative and post -operative cardiothoracic surgical patients.

5. To request and follow-up appropriate patient investigations.

6. Be actively involved in audit to ensure current and up to date practice.

7. To provide specialist, technical and clinical advice to patients and relevant colleagues in the peri-operative setting.

8. Involvement in creating an environment for learning, where clinical practice is developed and disseminated to all members of staff.

9. To be aware of budgetary issues and contribute to the directorate budget setting.
