Job summary

Medical Examiner

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dedicated doctor to take on the role of Medical Examiner, providing independent scrutiny of deaths not referred to the coroner. This important service, established under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, plays a vital role in ensuring transparency, accuracy, and public confidence in the certification process.

As a Medical Examiner, you will be responsible for verifying clinical information on Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCDs), ensuring referrals to the coroner are appropriate, and that MCCDs are accurate and consistent. You will review documentation and the circumstances surrounding the majority of deaths, supporting bereaved families and healthcare professionals with sensitivity and integrity.

We welcome applications from senior doctors across a range of disciplines, including GPs, who are registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), hold a license to practise in the UK, and have a minimum of five years' experience as a registered medical practitioner.

Full training is provided, including online and face-to-face/virtual modules commissioned by Health Education England and the Royal College of Pathologists' Medical Examiners Committee. On completion, you will also have the opportunity to become a member of the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPathME).

Main duties of the job

To autonomously manage own workload unsupervised working under clearly defined policies and procedures.

To participate in the medical examiner's team to improve the processes of death certification and referrals to the coroner.

Knowledge of local and national clinical governance systems and how the ME can work collaboratively.

Knowledge of the special requirements of various faith groups and respect for equality and diversity.

Up-to-date knowledge of causes of death and an understanding of the legal frameworks associated with death certification processes.
