Job summary

Are you an experienced , motivated nurse with a passion for high-quality care? We are looking for a dynamic band 6 Orthopaedic Pre-assessment nurse to join our friendly and innovative team.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in ensuring safe and effective care for patients preparing for orthopaedic surgery. You will work as clinical expert, using advanced assessments and decision-making skills to support patient throughout pre-operative process. Our nurse led team deliver ore-operative assessment to Orthopaedics patients and works closely with anesthetics and consultants.

This post may be offered as Band 5 development role for suitable candidates who not yet meet all the criteria for Band 6 position. In this case, we will support with a structured development plan and mentorship, with progression to Band 6 upon completion of agreed competencies and objectives.

Main duties of the job

The key components of this role englobes carrying out comprehensive pre-operative assessments for patients undergoing orthopaedic procedures.

You will need to develop individualised care plans to optimise patients for surgery, identifying and managing pre-operative risks. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safely and timely surgical readiness. Educate patients on their surgical journey, including medication adjustment, enhanced recovery programs and fasting instructions.

  • To work within Orthopedic Liaison team (STORM and Orthopedic Pre-assessment) in a variety of roles, such as Preoperative assessment.
  • To assess elective orthopedic surgery patients for fitness for surgery and refer to other agencies or medical teams as appropriate. To carry out medical clerking of the pre-operative patients and to carry out nutritional assessment.
  • Work within a tea of staff responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating holistic, high quality and individualized care which respects patient personal dignity and beliefs.
  • Ensure all documentation is complete and accurate and that information is stored and maintained appropriately.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Identify and undertake initiatives to improve quality of patient care, developing the service.
  • Ensure appropriate communication mechanisms are in place and promote and maintain effective communication within the service/ multidisciplinary team, colleagues, patients, relatives, visitors and between other departments.
  • Collaborate with members of the multi-disciplinary team within and outside of Trust.
  • Empower patients, provide, and promote health education and advise on prevention of ill health.
  • Act as the patient advocate when appropriate and ensure that nursing staff can offer guidance on treatment options to enable the patient to make an informed choice.
  • Maintain a professional profile and develop skills, knowledge and competencies adhering to the NMC code of Professional Conduct Trust Policies and Procedures.

  • Registered Nurse on parts 1 NMC Register with sound clinical knowledge and evidence of continuing professional development.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Significant relevant orthopaedic experience and/ or completion of the post registration orthopaedic course.
  • Significant experience with Elective Orthopaedic pathways.

Desirable

  • Diagnostic and Consultation skills
  • Previous experience of patient pre-assessments
