Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 9-month secondment within the Maternity Governance Team.

This role will support the Lead Midwife for Maternity Safety in achieving the operational delivery of risk management across the division. The post holder will have a patient centred approach and will work in such a way as to help promote an open and transparent culture that actively improves clinical safety and quality.

The post holder will be responsible for leading the day to day management of incidents and their review, identification and management of risk and compliance within the division under the direction of the Lead Midwife for Maternity Safety, working collaboratively with other managers including the MSE Patient Safety and Risk and Compliance teams to deliver an effective Clinical Governance Assurance Framework.

Specifically, the role will provide clinical expertise to lead on the effective and timely review of incidents and their management, risk review and reporting and supporting the regulatory compliance agenda. An expert knowledge of the patient safety incident response framework (PSIRF), the principles of risk management and the CQC regulations will ensure regular exception reports are escalated and acted upon.

The post holder will be a member of key governance groups and will deputise for the Lead Midwife for Maternity Safety as required. The post holder will provide line management to the Governance Coordinator.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will need to act as a credible ambassador for the trust, providing support and guidance to staff at all levels across maternity services.Respond to deviations highlighted in regular reports by escalating them appropriately.

To attend key governance meetings and deputise for the Lead Midwife for Governance as necessary.

To support incident managment in line with the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework andthe development of responses to complaints that meet the needs of patients and their families.

To provide expert midwifery knowledge to the team and demonstrate commitment to midwifery practice.

Coordinating investigations and create comprehensive reports on incidents declared as patient safety incidents (PSII), ensuring data collection and report quality.

Ensure initial management reviews are submitted promptly to the Patient Safety Incident Review Group (PSIRG) and escalate as necessary and to develop and implement actions to address recommendations from reports.

To be confident in escalating any delays or exceptions in the process to senior staff.

These duties collectively ensure the safe, effective, and high-quality delivery of maternity care while maintaining compliance with regulations, promoting a positive patient experience, and supporting staff development.
