Job summary
As a Maternity Smoking Support Worker (MSSW), you will be part of the team who are responsible for the support and treatment of women and birthing people and their families who smoke and wish to stop. You will use techniques including giving advice, carbon monoxide screening, behavioural change skills and techniques, treatment and onward referral for community treatment post-discharge.
Good communication, administration and IT skills are important and will be utilised daily to maintain the smooth running of the service. Working as part of the maternity team we ensure we communicate in an open, and effective way to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of people who use health and care services and their carers.
Main duties of the job
Deliver a stop smoking service to the Maternity population across Mid and South Essex through the provision of a combination of behavioural and pharmacological advice and support to help smokers stop, in line with best practice guidelines.
Deliver brief interventions to all smokers and recruit those who wish to stop, from maternity services and inpatient services.
Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates.
Manage own clinics including time keeping and appointments booking; both on site and through home visits.
Meet regularly with the Specialist Smoke Free Midwife to assess and direct progress.
Play an active role in the local and regional tobacco dependency workstreams.
Clear and effective communicator with the ability to converse with all patients, their friends and families, and staff at all levels within the acute setting.
Contribute to the delivery of local marketing and promotion activities, working in conjunction with other stop smoking colleagues to promote all service activities.
Identify and explore potential opportunities for service growth and development, and feedback to line manager.
Ensure patient referral data is captured and stored confidentially and in accordance with Information Governance requirements.
Maintaining up to date and accurate referral systems and patient recordsCross site working to support other MSE sites may also be required.
