Job summary
We are looking for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology to join our team at Broomfield Hospital on a full time permanent basis.

Broomfield Hospital is part of the Mid and South Essex Hospital group with a busy Emergency Department, an internationally renowned Regional Burns Unit and Plastic Surgery Unit as well as a busy Renal Unit.
We are a busy Microbiology department with approx. 35+ staff and we are a friendly modern laboratory looking to replace the current post holder who is internally moving to a new post after promotion.
Main duties of the job
We are a busy department with a wide ranging repertoire of diagnostic testing and currently process approximately 350,000 tests per year.
A comprehensive knowledge of Microbiology would be required and you would be joining a friendly and dedicated team of scientists working within Pathology.
The department currently utilises the following equipment: Vitek2, BacT/Alert (TB & blood culture systems), Sysmex UF5000 Urine analyser, two Hologic Panthers and two Diasorin Liaison XL machines. There is a requirement for staff to apply who have experience with this and sound general bacteriology knowledge from a UK NHS or Private laboratory.
We operate a routine diagnostic service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The successful candidate must be prepared to participate in a shift working pattern, which includes weekend and Bank Holiday working. The service operates 7 days a week and will require working 1 Saturday in 4 and also take park in a service on-call rota covering 365 days per year. The applicant will be required to take part in the Service On call rota covering 7 days per week.

In accordance with agreed protocols and Standard Operating Procedures, the post-holder will be expected to prepare biological samples for analysis, undertake the required analysis and interpret results, reflexing further actions, when necessary, in all defined areas of the laboratory using a range of modern automation.
As a specialist Biomedical Scientist, these tasks will be performed unsupervised. The post-holder will ensure that the processes have been performed to comply with all relevant quality standards. Maintenance of competency, fitness to practice and continued professional development is necessary for all HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists.
