Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the friendly team in the Cellular Pathology department at Broomfield Hospital.
For a Band 6 position, HCPC-registration is essential with the specialist portfolio and/or a relevant MSc or equivalent.
The post-holder:
- is expected to participate in all areas of the department, on a rotational basis.
- is required to obtain and maintain competency in all relevant aspects of the laboratory.
Cellular Pathology at Broomfield Hospital is a busy department that handles approximately 30,000 specimens p.a., specialising in Breast; Head & Neck; upper GI, and has close liaison with oncology research trials and Anglia Ruskin University.
The department has full training status granted by IBMS and close links with Essex University for placement students. Staff are encouraged to maintain continuous professional development required for state registration and to attend lunchtime lectures.
The laboratory is working towards accreditation and is licensed by HTA.
There is a strong training ethos in the department - we have a full-time training Lead in post to support developmental needs.
The Pathology Department regularly holds lunchtime seminars. You must be keen to develop your knowledge and skills.

Main duties of the job
- Registered with Health Professions Council and comply with code of practice of IBMS and HCPC.
- Undertake all aspects of tissue preparation work in the department, including specimen reception and cut up, meeting quality standards.
- Assist in small specimen cut up by selecting tissues for further processing by following departmental procedures.
- Participate in the departmental work rota; including immunocytochemistry, staining, section cutting and embedding.Involved in booking in test details and patient details on to laboratory computer system.
- To monitor and maintain laboratory equipment.Contribute to the development of new methodologies, as required for improvement of the service or research within the department.
- To conform to established policies and codes of practice within the department and participate in the internal quality procedures as well as taking part in EQA.
- To suggest ways to improve working practices, as the need arises.
- To contribute to producing reports in a timely manner, meeting any deadlines necessary for further patient care and treatment.
- To participate in the production of fresh frozen sections for urgent reporting as required.
- You will be required to assist the training of junior staff throughout the department and to enable a robust and fluid work flow to aid TAT and Trust directives
- To work as part of a team to provide a high quality, cost effective and timely Histology service, as required by the Trust and its users.
