Job summary

We are advertising for a Consultant Urological Surgeon at MSE Hospitals based at Broomfield Hospital. The Urology directorate has 20 consultants running two on call services based at Southend and Broomfield Hospitals each with a 1:10 on-call rota with 24/7 middle grade cover on a consultant of the week model.

A urology pelvic on-call rota also provides cover based at Southend Hospital. MSE is fortunate to have 3 Da Vinci robots, 2 based at Southend hospital and 1 based at Broomfield hospital. Southend is the regional urology cancer centre and Broomfield Hospital is now the emergency hub for Chelmsford and Basildon patients together with complex elective benign and local cancer surgery. Robotic renal surgery and PCNL and lithotripsy are carried out here.

We are looking to appoint a consultant with a specialist interest in Andrology and Urethral reconstruction. The andrology post will be supported by a link with the established pathway to the tertiary centre at St George's Hospital in London. Successful candidates may be required to work at another Trust site in addition to their base site.

Essex's first medical school opened in Chelmsford at Anglia Ruskin University in 2018. The Trust therefore has redoubled its focus on education, as the students are now undergoing clinical rotations at the Trust's sites. It is thus an essential criterion, that the prospective applicant, has an interest in education.

Provisional AAC Date: 8th March 2024.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this post is to provide an andrology and urethral service for the local population. The appointee is also expected to take part in all departmental activities, including on-call, audit and teaching and will be encouraged to develop new services in line with GIRFT.

This post will be supported professionally by a link with the established pathway to the tertiary centre at St George's Hospital in London. Please feel free to contact Prof Nick Watkin at St George's Hospital to discuss further how the working relationship would work in the short and longer term.

You would be expected to participate in on call commitments and undertake emergency procedures.

You will also be expected to participate in professional medical responsibilities and training of the junior medical staff.

The consultants are the senior members of the Trust's medical team, and in this role, they have responsibility for providing a complete urology service, as well as training and education to the junior medical and other staff, as required.

Consultant medical staff are expected to be involved with the General Manager and Clinical Director in the compilation, implementation and monitoring of the business plan for the urology service.

About us

MSE is a new Foundation Trust, made up principally of Broomfield Hospital, Southend Hospital and Basildon Hospital. There are also outlying district sites covered by the Trust (e.g. Braintree Community Hospital, St Peter's Hospital, Maldon and Orsett Hospital). The Trusts merged in April 2020 with a view to providing joined-up care across Mid & South Essex. We are now one of the largest Hospital Trusts in the UK.

We work together, and in conjunction with MSE Health and Care Partnership, to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients in a compassionate way, and provide a respectful, but vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

From facilities through to consultant specialists we want to be the best, to achieve this we need to recruit not just those who are the finest in their field but also those who have the potential to be. Yes, experience is important but so is outlook - if you are dynamic, forward-thinking and enthusiastic we want you to join us.

We not only offer you a good working environment with flexible working opportunities, but also the opportunity to develop your career with access to appropriate training for your job and the support to succeed and progress.
