Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Senior Clinical Fellow - Corneal

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

The corneal service is well established in Southend, having been initially set up by Professor Peter Choyce, an early pioneer of intraocular lenses and corneal refractive surgery and has since gone from strength to strength. It is a very busy unit and there is scope for further development both locally and in the community. We currently perform in excess of 100 corneal graft surgical procedures per year in addition to complex anterior segment reconstruction and refractive surgery.

The corneal service is led by Mr James Myerscough who has a special interest in lamellar corneal surgery and refractive surgery.

The fellowship offers the opportunity to learn and perform lamellar keratoplasty in addition to exposure to high volume cataract surgery. A successful candidate would be expected to engage actively with the research opportunities available in Southend including collaborating with international research projects underway in the unit. The post includes a research/admin session in which the fellow has protected time to work on research projects in addition to contributing to local audit processes.

Please note - this fellowship begins in August 2024.

Main duties of the job

To act as point of contact for corneal support to junior medical staff within the department and undertake some general ophthalmic outpatient clinic commitment.

To coordinate and undertake acute corneal service, under the guidance of the Consultant Ophthalmologist.

To coordinate all administration related to corneal transplant tissue.

To participate in all corneal clinics and theatre sessions.

The Ophthalmology service is delivered to the population of South Essex from Southend University Hospital, Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Orsett Hospital near Basildon and Braintree Community Hospital as well as outreach clinics in the localities.

Similar facilities are available across sites the exception of paediatric operating facilities which are only available at Southend and Broomfield Hospital.

Our stand-alone unit within the Southend NHS teaching hospital site comprises of 2 dedicated theatres, 1 of which is GA, 2 day stay bays with 1 single en-suite side room (9 beds) and 17 outpatient rooms which include diagnostic facilities for all sub-specialties. Plans are currently underway to expand and modernise the unit to meet the present day demands. Our self-contained satellite unit at Orsett Hospital also provides a dedicated day stay theatre and outpatient facilities.
