Here is an leadership opportunity to join our Integrated care team as a Matron for Covid Services.

COVID Services' consists of the MSE COVID-19 Complex Vaccination Service and MSE CMDU (COVID Medicines Delivery Unit). The MSE Complex Vaccination Service provides and advice supports the provision of hospital supervised COVID-19 vaccination for the general public and staff across MSE.

MSEFT is the lead provider for the MSE CMDU which provides nMABs (Neutralising Monoclonal Antibodies) and anti-viral treatments for clinically vulnerable patients who test positive for COVID-19 (in line with NICE Guidance [TA878].)

The Matron for COVID Services will be ultimately responsible for the clinical screening, clinical triage and prescription of nMABs and anti-viral treatment within the MSE CMDU. The Matron will need to be a Non-Medical Prescriber, support will be given to attain the appropriate scope and competences. The Matron will also provide support to the operational lead for Hospital at Home and OPAT services.

Main duties of the job

  • You will work within the service as part of the management team and will take responsibility for the delivery and maintenance of the highest standards of nursing and cover the Head of Nursing and other Senior Nurses in the division as appropriate.
  • You will be professionally accountable for standards of nursing and influence the non-clinical contributions that are necessary to care delivery including standards of cleanliness of the environment and other services that impact on patient care and welfare
  • You will have accountability for the day to day delivery of services including overall responsibility for Clinical Governance, Compliance and patient safety/experience.
  • You will support the clinical teams in developing integrated approaches to care across traditional organisational boundaries both internally and externally to the Trust
  • You will be easily identifiable to patients, highly visible and accessible to families and carers. They will be responsible for the staff working within their service and will be accountable to the Head of Nursing for professional practice and related day to day running of their service
  • You will work as part of the service management team, particularly with the Head, COVID vaccination and screening service in developing operational delivery of the service, supporting the Senior Sisters and other staff in maintaining quality standards.

  • Adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and trust policies pertaining to record keeping/patient confidentiality/the Data Protection Act/Caldecott recommendation
  • Develop and introduce systems to enhance the responsiveness of dealing with patients concerns, monitoring any trends, and developing appropriate actions
  • Assist in the achievement of CNST requirements, CQC Standards and CQUIN requirements and any other national targets/initiatives i.e. peer review
  • Ensure that professional nursing issues form part of the Divisional business plan. Promote and share good practice both internally and externally
  • The Matron will work in collaboration with all key parties to identify and implement innovative strategies for delivering effective care within a changing environment that improves the patient experience and health outcomes
  • Involvement in the PLACE audit, action plan and evaluation of action taken, working with Senior Sisters to improve the environment for all patients
  • Monitors and uses nursing research and clinical audit findings in pursuance of best practice.

  • To be responsible for Medicines Management within the unit and ensure adherence to NMC Medicines Management and Trust policies observing compliance and safe practices at all times particularly in relation to compliance, safe storage and administration of cytotoxic drugs
  • Ensure that the agreed high standards of cleanliness are met in clinical and public areas of the Trust and take appropriate action if standards fall, empowering all staff to take responsibility for their environmen
  • To work clinically for a minimum of 20% of contracted hours in an advisory, teaching or support capacity, maintaining professional competence, authority and credibility
  • To lead on the MSE complex covid-19 vaccination service, liaising with the Broomfield allergy team and relevant specialties as required, and providing appropriate advice to patients as per current Green book (chapter 14a) and JCVI guidance
  • Assist in the development of the service, establishing reporting arrangements, and communication systems and ensuring that operational performance is fed back to the Divisional Management Team

  • Lead on the audit and evaluation of nursing care and practice. Ensuring that local systems and monitoring arrangements are in place for Quality Key Performance Indicators

  • Demonstrates the principles of shared governance and facilitates staff empowerment. The post holder will work with the Divisional management team to meet Trust performance management targets, commissioner and government requirements.

  • Advise on the level of nursing care and skill mix required to meet on-going and future needs within each specialist area and across the unit, whilst supporting a model of cross cover within the unit.

  • Provide leadership and direction in the delivery of infection control practice, liaising with Infection Control Nurses as appropriate, in relation to the NHS targets and local policy e.g. Matron Charter, MRSA targets and hand washing, thus contributing to the reduction of hospital acquired infection.
