Job summary
As one of our senior stroke therapists takes maternity leave, and we are reviewing the skill set across the team, we have the opportunity to offer someone looking to develop their leadership skills and clinical experience in the management of patients with acute communication and swallowing disorders post-CVA a fixed term contract within our team.
In addition to supporting the stroke team therapists and assistants and helping to enhance and develop their clinical skillset in this area, the post holder will also be involved in regular videofluoroscopy clinics, and where skilled, in our FEES service (training may be given to a post holder showing interest but no clinical competency in FEES). You will also experience working with CCU both with stroke and non-stroke patients, dependent on clinical experience, and may be trained in supportive management of tracheostomized patients if you have an interest in this area. We are currently also using Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation on a small cohort of patients , following NICE guidance in this area.

Main duties of the job
- to independently manage a caseload of patients who have acute communication/swallowing disorders,
- to support and lead the Stroke Speech & Language team, under the guidance of Service Lead
- to support the service in the assessment/management of the in-patient caseload where shortfalls within that service are prioritized over the stroke patient cohort.
- to continue to develop clinical skills in instrumental assessment of swallowing disorders (Videofluoroscopy/FEES), and in complex dysphagia management
- to ensure that you provide assessment and management following evidenced based practice and keeping the patient at the center of your input.
