Job summary
Our Stroke Medicine Service at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford has opportunities for Doctors with a minimum 4 years ST3+ experience, of which at least 2 need to be in this specialty, to join its dynamic, supportive and friendly team as Specialty Doctors, to form an important link between the acute medicine, medical inpatients and Stroke departments.
As our Specialty Doctor, you will be expected to show qualities of leadership but also to know your limitations and call for help and advice appropriately, working independently with close support from Consultant colleagues and liaising between nurses, junior doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff.
On a rotational basis, the appointee may provide support at a community hospital for medical cover of inpatients in stroke rehabilitation unit and on a similar note, rotational input into Neurology would be encouraged. Individuals with 2 years.
The Stroke Ward, made up of 32 beds, will be supported by 4 juniors normally which includes a mix of F1, IMT, GPVTS and trust grade doctors
Main duties of the job
You will be given first class opportunities to undertake clinical assessment of a suspected stroke or TIA in an adult patient referred as an emergency to hospital or in an out-patient setting, supervised learning to arrange and interpret appropriate investigations, self-sufficiency in imaging like brain scan and carotid Doppler to support or exclude diagnosis of a suspected stroke or TIA and its cause and training to able to manage secondary prevention strategies following stroke or TIA and be expected to contribute to post-discharge medical care, rehabilitation and longer term social and vocational integration.
Your role will involve learning to manage hyper acute treatment for stroke TIA and common stroke mimics with current and emerging interventional management of patients undergoing cerebral reperfusion therapies in acute ischaemic stroke, learning to manage immediate post-acute care of stroke including end-of-life care for stroke patients.
You will be expected to recruit in multicentre trials of stroke as an independent recruiter and able to design and help existing research projects with opportunities to contribute to the development of a stroke service and provide leadership to such a service and to undertake teaching and training of stroke related topics for medical undergraduates, post-graduates and other healthcare professionals.
