Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Advanced Specialist Band 7 Biomedical Scientist to join the friendly team in the Microbiology department at Broomfield Hospital.
Microbiology at Broomfield Hospital is a busy department that incorporates investigations for both Bacteriology, Serology & Virology and sample preparations. The department handles approximately 350,000 specimens p.a inc using the modern automated machines in use
The laboratory has UKAS accreditation and is currently awaiting feedback from a recent visit.
You will be required to participate in all areas of the department, on a rotational basis. The post-holder will be required to obtain and maintain competency in all relevant aspects of the laboratory.
You will be required to assist the training of junior staff in microbiology and to organise a robust and fluid work flow to aid TAT and Trust directives.
To work as part of a team to provide a high quality, cost effective and timely Microbiology service, as required by the Trust and its users.

Main duties of the job
- To manage a smooth, effective workflow through the department to facilitate departmental and Trust guidelines whilst ensuring safe service delivery and maintenance of expected TATs
- To work as part of a team to provide a high quality, cost effective and timely Microbiology service, as required by the Trust and service users.
- To participate in all aspects of the Microbiology department, using technical expertise to a high standard throughout all investigations and meeting deadlines as required for subsequent patient care.
- To ensure that the demands of the department are managed to facilitate a high quality of work with an efficient workflow. To be involved in, and in some cases responsible for, service developments
- To assist in the training of both BMS staff undertaking specialist portfolio, inc trainee Band 5 BMS staff, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants and contribute to their development.
- To participate in recruitment of staff. To carry out appraisal of staff
- To be responsible for QC and QA in area of responsibility, ensuring non-conformances are investigated, documented and changes to practice identified where necessary, in association with the Quality Lead
- To participate in and undertake audit
- To be responsible for writing and maintaining SOPs in area of responsibility
- To report, investigate and monitor errors and incidents as per policies
- To cross-deputise for other Senior BMSs as required

- Registered with Health Professions Council and comply with code of practice of IBMS and HPC.
- Undertake all aspects of Microbiology preparation work in the department, including specimen reception, bench reading as well as support for those meeting quality standards.
- Assist in being on a shared rota with other seniors as duty Manager by supporting the staff needs as well as reactive to daily tasks and challenges while working as an important part of the team.
- Selecting for further processing relevant authorisation queues by following departmental procedures.
- Participate in the departmental work rota, including bench reading and support for other seniors as required.
- Preparation of Change Control work ups for new procedures and working with others to implement Change Controls on new automation coming.
- Involved in booking in test details and patient details on to laboratory computer system.
- To monitor and help maintain laboratory equipment.
- To participate in the laboratory sections for urgent reporting as required.
- To assist in the maintenance of high scientific and professional standards by performing departmental audits and attending educational courses as required.
- To monitor KPIs for area of responsibility, ensuring TATs are maintained
- To sustain competencies in the use of all equipment appropriate to the task involved.
- To be flexible and provide cover for colleagues at all levels within capabilities and training.
- Participation in Continuous Professional Development programme in order to maintain professional competence.
- To attend all mandatory training.
- To be aware of developments within Histopathology, Pathology and Trust Strategy and relevant NHS directives.
