Job summary
The postholder will work from the Kypros Nicolaides Fetal Medicine Centre at Southend working with the consultant body, clinical fellows (from the Fetal Medicine Foundation at King's College Hospital) and specialist midwives to provide and lead an outstanding Fetal Medicine Service providing a comprehensive service throughout pregnancy in the diagnosis and management of all fetal conditions.
The Fetal Medicine services diagnose and provide treatment for complications which arise in unborn babies. The services across the MSE provides for 12,500 Births and over 500 referrals to the service each year.
We aim to provide the highest standard of care in a professional, calm, and supportive environment. This is provided in a local, near to home setting, supported by Kings' College Hospital as needed.

Main duties of the job
The postholder will lead the Fetal Medicine services to ensure:
- Ensure equity of access to Fetal Medicine services across the MSE, with standards, policies and protocols
- Lead and motivate the multi-disciplinary team to deliver effective patient-focused care and interventions
- Education and training
- Drive forward innovations and improvements within the service, including supporting the advancement of scientific and clinical knowledge by conducting and participating in research
- Drive the annual audit programme and quality assurance programme.
- Communication with King's College Hospital Fetal Medicine Service as needed.
To contribute to the leadership and development of the Fetal Medicine Service, with attendance at relevant MDTs and the MSE steering group. Working across the MSE to deliver service change and quality improvement.

Clinical Duties for Fetal Medicine:
- Provide rapid access clinics seeing urgent patients within 48 hours
- Provide a fetal medicine opinion and counselling to patients and work with the specialist midwives to confirm care plans
- Provide for invasive procedures within specialist clinics
- Liaise closely with the neonatal teams to plan high risk births that will require neonatal input
- Contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings, including perinatal morbidity and mortality reviews, guidelines, audit, and teaching
- Conduct complaint and incident investigations related to area of expertise
- Supervising Clinical Fellows
Provide High Quality Care to Patients
- The post holder must adhere to the standards outlined by the GMC for Good Medical Practice.
- Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
- Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
- Ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views. Demonstrate, model and encourage Trust Values at all times to all patients and staff.
Research, Teaching and Training
- Provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as agreed with the Service Leads. To contribute to the training of: O&G trainees including advanced specialty training up to ATSM level; other doctors in training and other staff groups.
- Act as a clinical supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead to ensure external accreditation of training posts..
- Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts translational research/audit portfolio, always meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
- Ensure that your mandatory training is up to date as per Trust policy. The Trust expects all consultants to fully participate in continuing professional development to ensure that skills and knowledge are updated in line with relevant medical developments. Consultants may apply to the study leave budget for help with associated expenses in line with the terms and conditions of their contract. In addition, consultants will be expected to undertake some non-clinical training and development at the discretion of the trust management, for example, leadership training, performance management.
To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
- Clinical efficiency e.g. Length of Stay (LOS) reductions, admission on day of surgery, reducing cancelled operations and DNA rates.
- Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates
- Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.
- Operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management.
