The Medical Examiner's Office is a hosted service by acute trusts (and a small number of specialist trusts) on behalf of NHS England (NHSE)The role involves specific responsibility for providing senior leadership and management of the Medical Examiner service across the Trust, including monitoring and overseeing MEO staff performance, training and wellbeing; and ensuring that the service is delivered within budget to agreed quality standards. The post holder is required to lead and participate in the medical examiner's team to improve the processes of death certification and referrals to HM Coroner. They will work with medical examiners to aid them in their responsibility for overseeing the death certification process for all deceased patients in the Trust and relevant community.Out of hours working may be required under exceptional circumstances (i.e. a pandemic) and adequate notice will be given. However, this arrangement may be subject to change under NHSE review.

Main duties of the job

Provide leadership in the Medical Examiner service to ensure that the Trust complies with its statutory obligations in respect of deceased patients.

Line manage and support the other Medical Examiner Officers employed by the Trust including the management of annual leave, sick leave and performance management.

Work with the Regional Lead Medical Examiner Officer to maintain the Medical Examiner service in line with national proposals and contribute to the development of the service.

Engage in effective, compassionate, complex and sensitive communication with the bereaved and users of the service.

Provide advice to the bereaved and other users of the service, Health CareProfessionals involved in the patient's care, HM Coroner's Office, Registrars and Bereavement office/advisors.

To act as an intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians to establish and escalate any concerns relating to a patient's death.

To discuss content of medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD) with relatives of deceased and in all cases, collect additional information. This may include the need to communicate sensitive information and offer explanations about disease pathology and medical treatments.

To act as a source of expertise, specialist advice and knowledge for relatives and health care professionals involved in the circumstances of the death of a patient.
