Job summary

At Southend University Hospital we are committed to providing a supportive environment for the development of Occupational Therapists. Our department operates an integrated therapy service, where Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists work alongside each other in a variety of the clinical areas. The culture of multi-disciplinary working is well established and respected within the hospital.

We are currently looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic Occupational Therapist to join our Stroke Team in a band 6 position. This position offers the opportunity to develop clinically and managerially in a fast paced environment working with our established Stroke Team.

Our Stroke Team is led by our Stroke Clinical Manager and Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist with the support of our Band 7 Team Leader who is highly experienced in the management of stroke care. We have regular Occupational therapy team meetings, a practice development Occupational Therapist and actively encourage CPD.

In return we offer training and clinical development opportunities with a comprehensive in-service training program and regular clinical supervision. We also provide additional support in order for staff to attend recognised courses within the area of the post to support staff development. The Therapy Team is also committed to supporting the development of leadership skills at Band 6 encouraging staff to attend relevant courses provided by the Trust.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our forward thinking and innovative acute stroke therapy service. We currently have a vacancy at Band 6 within our inpatient stroke occupational therapy team which will allow the successful candidate the opportunity to progress within their occupational therapy career gaining confidence and experience within this clinical area. This position allows the post holder to further their clinical and management experience with a wide range of stroke presentations working closely with our MDT colleagues and community partners

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to be flexible and thrive in a fast paced environment. They will be responsible for day to day management of the service delivery and manage a complex caseload with support from their band 7 team lead. They will gain experience in supervising staff and become an accredited practice placement educator.

This role requires strong leadership skills and the ability to engage others, with a proactive approach to service development. You will also demonstrate a strong commitment to a person centred approach in line with the Trust Values and Behaviours.

Together with the team leaders in our other in-patient specialities, you will support the Occupational Therapy Clinical Lead and the Therapies Manager in the strategic and operational planning for the department.

The successful candidate will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team within a defined area of the service to assess and help patients return home as quickly as possible, while ensuring their medical and therapy needs are being met. They will contribute to improving the patients journey by providing early goal-setting and intervention at the start of a hospital journey facilitating safe discharge.

The successful candidate would benefit from experience in a generic capacity enabling them to complete core assessments but the ability to then utilise their specialist occupational therapy skills and problem solving theindividual within a fast paced environment. This Assess model improves the flow of patients from admission, through their stay in hospital and back to independent living when they return home.

Each rotation is supported by a well-established supervision and in-service training programme. There are also opportunities for study leave and course funding both internally and externally.

The role will include the supervision of students from University of Essex and University of Hertfordshire and the mentoring of Band 5 Occupational Therapists, Activities of Daily Living Advisors and Rehabilitation Assistants.

We are able to offer Full Time or Part time options (minimum 30 hrs per week) and flexible working options. The post holder will actively participate in the weekend rotas and some teams are providing extended working hours.
