Senior Clinical Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics

Job responsibilities

The Clinical fellow in orthopaedics and trauma will work alongside Core Trainees and Foundation Year doctors on the junior rota. Duties will involve the medical and orthopaedic management of orthopaedic patients, the assessment of patients in the Emergency Department and assisting in theatre.

The orthopaedic department is committed to education and training with a teaching programme for juniors and journal club. Trainees are encouraged to attend fracture clinic and outpatients. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in departmental audit and research activity.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients. Assisting with teaching and training of junior staff and medical students To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit. To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

Direct Clinical Care

Day-to-day management of orthopaedic patients under post-holder's consultants care.

Care of out-patients, including the conducting of orthopaedic clinics under the supervision of the Consultant.

To undertake theatre lists on orthopaedic patients under the supervision of a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

The post-holder is expected to participate in the management of the Department, especially in ensuring that appropriate deputising arrangement are made, when necessary, and supervising the day-to-day clinical work of the CT's and FY2s in the department.

The post-holder is expected to be committed to maintaining a high standard of note-keeping and communication with General Practitioners. He/she will be involved in preparing information for entry to the hospital's Clinical Information System and in preparing Discharge Summaries of patient's under the care of the consultant for whom he/she is working at the time.

Any other duties commensurate with the grade which may be allocated from time to time.

Pre-operative

Undertake pre-operative assessment and obtain consent for procedures.

Supporting Professional Activities

Participate in and contribute towards the teaching programme of medical and non-medical staff e.g.; journal clubs, tutorials, lectures, clinical meetings. May need recognised training approval from the Clinical Tutor/College for training SHOs.

Keep up-to-date records to satisfy continuous professional development requirements. Assist in Trust clinical risk management requirements.

Undertake research, if desired, as directed by supervising consultant for the directorate.

Clinical Management duties as delegated and agreed by the lead clinician or clinical director.

Essential

• Previous experience relevant to the specialty
• Applicant knowledge is up to date and is fit to practise safely Commitment for managing professional development

• Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk
• Out of hours experience relevant to job
• Experience in the specialty beyond ST3 or equivalent

IELTS certificate to be presented at interview. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence

Qualifications

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
• Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
• Evidence of achievement of ST1 / CT1 competencies in the specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2 / CT2 competences in specialty by the start date of the post [In some specialties this level of specialty or core training may not provide the right skills to perform effectively in a specialty doctor post].

Desirable

• Specialty specific requirements eg MRCP, FRCS, etc where appropriate

Knowledge

Essential

• Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
• Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
• Understanding of what the NHS Constitution means to you, and your responsibilities to the public, patients and colleagues.
