Job summary

Background

Death, dying and grief affect everyone. Yet we know there is unfairness in who gets support and how good that support is at the end of life. Ethnic minority communities in particular can face barriers to good care due to racism and other forms of prejudice and discrimination.

An innovative five-year project has been funded to understand how we can address racism in palliative and end-of-life care across Bradford and what services can learn from this nationally and internationally.

This post presents an exciting opportunity for three ethnic minority community members from Bradford (Pakistani/Bangladeshi, Black Caribbean, Roma/Eastern European) with experience of palliative and end-of-life care to join our supportive study team. Their role will be to help us understand how to systematically address racism in palliative and end-of-life care.

We are looking for organised, motivated and enthusiastic community researchers.

The successful candidates will work with the Principal Investigator and Senior Research Fellow to help design the study, collect data, support the analysis and help share the findings to ensure the findings have impact.

Job Purpose

The post holders will play a key role in shaping the study's design, recruiting participants, collecting data, supporting the analysis of findings, and sharing results with decision-makers and community members. They will receive training and dedicated support from the principal investigator and senior research fellow.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based within the world-leading Yorkshire Quality and Safety Research Group (YQSR) at the Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR).

The postholders will work on the study on a flexible, as-needed basis. On average, they will work around 4 hours a week - however this will vary from week to week. Some weeks may require no work and some may require a full day's work. The post will be for one year, with the potential for extension depending on the study findings.

The duties include providing feedback on the study proposal and methods, approaching, recruiting and consenting participants, collecting data through workshops, observations and interviews, supporting and feeding back on the analysis of findings, sharing findings and working with partners. Bespoke training will be provided for the community researchers.

We are particularly keen to hear from members of the Pakistani/Bangladeshi, Black Caribbean and Roma/Eastern European communities in Bradford with lived experience of end-of-life care. This can be as a carer, family member or friend.

In order to ensure high quality data are collected for the project the post holders will work alongside the study team.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Using their lived experience and understanding of what matters to ethnic minority communities in Bradford at the end of life, to inform the study design, conduct, findings and dissemination plans.
  • Work under the direction of the Senior Research Fellow and Principal Investigator at study sites, including community venues, to identify, consent and recruit participants into the study.
  • Arrange and plan their own work on a day-to-day basis within the overall demands and priorities of the project, as agreed with the Senior Research Fellow/Principal Investigator.
  • Organise the times and equipment for study visits.
  • Work independently to arrange and conduct visits with research participants
  • Be responsible for the collection of timely, accurate and complete data from participants: this includes interviews, workshops and observations.
  • Report any anomalies in data to the Senior Research Fellow/Principal Investigator
  • Be responsible for inputting data into the departmental database systems and producing feedback/reports as required.
  • Monitor the quality of data collected and advise where quality is poor
  • Contribute to the development of strategies to maximise response rates to studies
  • Contribute to the development of study materials, including translations (where applicable), standard operating procedures and participant-facing materials.

  • Ensure advice and information is available for relevant study sites.
  • Organise, participate and take notes in meetings with other members of the Project Team and ask for clarification when needed.
  • Attend training sessions as required
  • Liaise with all relevant clinical, community and research staff
  • Be familiar with and adhere to research protocols and standard operating procedures and work within the research governance framework (training will be provided)
  • Work flexibly to accommodate the requirements of the project, where possible.

  • Any other tasks commensurate with the grade which may be required from time to time to ensure the effective running of the study
