Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Hand Surgery or Skin and General

The closing date is 17 August 2025

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the expanding Plastic Surgery Department at Bradford Teaching Hospitals as a Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon. This role offers the potential for a sub specialtyfocus in Hand Surgery or Skin and General Plastic Surgery, with a view to transitioning into a substantive Consultant post.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides specialist services across a wide geographical area, with referrals from Calderdale, Airedale, and Wharfedale hospitals. The department is proud to be the only centre in Yorkshire offering acute hand surgery primarily under WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet) technique in our newly built bespoke Plastics Hand Unit.

We maintain a strong collaborative relationship with Leeds, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to attend the Specialist Skin Multidisciplinary Team (SSMDT) meetings in Leeds on a fortnightly basis.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated Consultant to play an integral role in the growth and development of the Plastic Surgery service in Bradford. The successful applicant will be encouraged to contribute to service innovation, teaching, and research, as well as to help shape the future direction of the department.

Main duties of the job

The Role:

  • Deliver emergency plastic surgery services, including a one-week-in-eight trauma service rotation.
  • Participate in midweek and weekend on-call rotas and engage in clinical governance, management, and administrative activities.

The Plastic Surgery unit at Bradford is a sub-regional unit providing a trauma service for the patients of Bradford, Airedale, Calderdale and Huddersfield. It accepts a large number of emergency hand and plastic trauma injuries serving a population of around 1 million.

In addition for the duration of this post will provide support to the middle grade doctors for the provision of trauma surgery and minor local anaesthetic surgery. It is expected that the appointee would provide flexible cover for annual leave.

A commitment to audit and clinical governance and risk management is mandatory.

It is expected that the post holder will actively participate in leading the training and assessment of Junior Doctors. The duties are subject to review and maybe varied according to changing requirements of the service.
