The post holder will practice under supervision whilst in clinical placement areas, to provide advanced patient-centred care (within an agreed scope of practice). This will encompass the four pillars of advanced practice and incorporate the skills of assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment. They will assist in the safe assessment, management, referral and discharge of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed presentations in any area of the clinical placement.

Throughout the training programme the post holder will develop the skills of an autonomous practitioner ensuring that evidence based practice is inherent in as aspects within the neonatal/maternity setting.

On completion the practitioner will have demonstrated clinical expertise, competence, confidence and be able to work within an autonomous and defined sphere of practice, maintaining records and in collaboration with healthcare colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Under supervision, provide a level of advanced and comprehensive health assessment based on a specialist body of knowledge. To appropriately assess, examine, investigate, diagnose and treat the newborn, resulting in safe management and appropriate referral or discharge of the newborn within the specified boundaries of the role as a trainee.

Under supervision, using an extended scope of practice beyond own profession, review all information available, including interpretation of laboratory and radiological results. Utilising a systematic process of assessment and critical reasoning with the support of your clinical supervisor, make a differential diagnosis, and record and initiate an appropriate newborn management plan prioritising the most probable diagnosis.

  • Evidence of practical contributions to the development of service and care pathways in the last 2 years
  • Managerial responsibility including supervision and appraisal of junior staff
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and the practical application of new skills to the work place, demonstrating specialist expertise.
  • Evidence of contribution to audit programmes within practice
  • Evidence of relevant involvement in meeting the Trust clinical governance objectives
  • Experience working in Neonatal Care
