Job summary
The appointee will join the other Consultant Histopathologists in the Department to form a Team which provides diagnostic histopathology, non-cervical cytopathology and autopsy services (if desired).The department is predominantly made up of Consultant Histopathologists which are sub-specialised but also participate in the reporting of general "pooled" specimens. This post is for a generalist histopathologist although with a specific interest in Breast and GI pathology.The appointee will contribute to all subspecialist work of the Department but with a focus on breast. The successful candidate would be expected to contribute to the two weekly breast MDT rota. This may include histological review of cases referred to BTHFT for MDT discussion and treatment. Consultants within the department, where possible, take a flexible approach to sub-specialisation so that all areas are supported to a degree commensurate with the workload in that speciality. All consultants are expected to contribute, on a rotational basis, to the weekly skin MDT.
Main duties of the job
General Duties:
To provide a rapid, reliable diagnostic histopathology and cytopathology service to the Trust, working as part of a Team of Consultant Histopathologists
To liaise with clinical colleagues and technical staff, to provide advice and to be available for consultation on the interpretation of diagnostic findings.
To share in the teaching and training of medical and BMS trainees, undergraduate students and trainees in other disciplines
To share in the supervision and development of BMS cut up
To maintain and develop general and relevant subspecialty skills and remain abreast of modern clinical and professional practice
To participate in the CPD scheme of the Royal College of Pathologists.
To participate in relevant multidisciplinary/CPC meetings providing cover when required
To share responsibility for the proper use of funds within the department
To manage personal workload in such a way that capacity is maximized and quality of care is optimized
To participate in quality management activities including relevant professional EQA schemes, audit, SOP preparation and all aspects of clinical governance.
To attend departmental business, operational and clinical governance meetings and to providing clinical and professional input and advice to the laboratory service
To cover for Consultant colleagues when they take leave. Similarly the appointee will be covered in absences for annual and study leave by colleagues.

**Flexibility is an important part of the professional contract. Although the default place of work is the Trust, Histopathology Consultants can spend up to 50% of their weekly contractual obligations working from home. Attending the histopathology department at BRI from 0900 to 1700 is mandatory on days when the Consultant is rotated to be on hot seat duty.
***Clinical Histopathology includes microscopy, gross pathology, frozen section analysis, hot seat duty, as well as trainee case checking and one-on-one double-header training.
****All full-time Consultant Histopathologists in the department share skin MDT duties on a rotational basis as per set by the Specialty Lead in the weekly rota.
*****Workday on Friday ends at 1600 if rotated to present at the Friday skin MDT which starts at 0800.
The Foundation Trust is keen to support newly appointed consultants and the appointee is encouraged to have a mentor. A number of senior colleagues are available for this purpose and the clinical lead will facilitate this once the appointee takes up the post.
