Healthcare Assistant-

Maternity Assessment centre and Antenatal Day unit - Band 2

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an excellent team within the Maternity Assessment unit (MACU) and the Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU) in the Women's and Newborn Unit at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As a Healthcare Assistant you will assist the team and work alongside the Midwives, admissions team and medical staff.

Both MACU and ANDU require support from dedicated Health Care Assistants, who can give physical and emotional support to women. You will be expected to perform phlebotomy skills for both services as required; you be required to assist with both the Midwifery and Medical teams. You will demonstrate a caring and compassionate nature, proactive and pragmatic in your work ethos and support with the safety and efficiency of the service to women and their families. Being an acute, fast paced area we will ensure we provide training and exposure on pertinent aspects of the service so you are confident to support women and your colleagues in what can be a sometimes challenging environment.

You will also need to be flexible, and be able to work between both ANDU (planned care) and MACU (unplanned care) .

In MACU, we operate a 24 hr service therefore you will be required to work a variety of 12 hour shifts that include weekends, night duty and public holidays.

Main duties of the job

To undertake indirect care duties, some direct care duties for women in support of and supervised by Registered Midwives and Medical practitioners.

  • Assist and support Midwives & Medical team with preparation of room and equipment for procedures.
  • Assist individual patients with elements of basic care following delegation from Midwives or Doctors
  • Contribute to the ongoing support of women and their relatives.
  • Contribute to the support of women being transferred from one part of the hospital service to another.
  • Assist with obtaining, transmitting and storing information related to care or the service.

  • Assist and contribute to the movement and treatment of patients, when clinical need occurs and instructed to do so my Midwife or Medical staff
  • Assist individual patients with personal hygiene and nutrition as required following consultation with registred Midwife or medical staff..
  • Record maternal observations and Urinalysis as required
  • Participate in clerica/administrativel duties as required.
  • Support qualified staff by carrying out accurate record keeping, taking and relaying verbal and written messages promptly, respecting confidentiality
  • To undertake work involving specialist skills following satisfactory assessment of competence and under the direction of a trained nurse
