Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Neonates at Bradford Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust and will be considered on full time or part time hours for this replacement post for a retired colleague.

Bradford Neonatology is a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) providing care for over 5000 inborn deliveries a year and plays a very active part in the Yorkshire & Humber Operational Delivery Network, including receiving in utero and ex utero transfers of all gestations from other hospitals. The expanded and refurbished neonatal unit has 31 cots. We are enthusiastic participants in multicentre trials and other research work, the conduct and results of which enhance and inform our practice. We have the full range of therapies available in house, including Nitric Oxide and cooling, but not acute neonatal surgery. Paediatric radiology, metabolic medicine and genetics are well represented in Bradford and we have close links with specialist colleagues in Leeds, including paediatric cardiology and a joint surgical appointment.

Bradford's population is ethnically diverse, variably deprived and affluent, but with poor indices of general health. Infant mortality is high (albeit falling), as are rates of low birthweight and stillbirth. Bradford clinicians respond to the needs of patients in innovative ways; in the field of research this includes running a 13 000 baby cohort study - "Born in Bradford".

Main duties of the job

The general paediatric department has 17 consultants and 3 wards. There is also is a fully staffed community paediatrics & child development centre with 7 consultants. There is a full complement of middle grade and junior staff on separate shift rotas for neonatal and paediatric cover. The Trust, and neonates and paediatrics in particular, enjoy a very good reputation as a place to train. Our model of care involves a high level of consultant input, provided on a routine out of hours, but on call, basis.

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute services for the City of Bradford and surrounding areas, and has two large Hospitals; Bradford Royal Infirmary and St. Luke's Hospital. All main specialties are represented in Bradford, and the Trust has a base of 900 beds. The redevelopment of the neonatal unit is complete bringing new beds and much enhanced facilities for existing beds. Our transitional care unit has recently relocated to a postnatal ward.

The Trust is committed to improving the working lives of its staff; we aim for a flexible approach to working hours, and have a number of family friendly policies.

Bradford has excellent road, rail and air links and boasts a wide variety of Art and Culture, as well as sports facilities and a vibrant social scene. It is also within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors, the Lake District, Peak District and Northumberland.

About us

At Bradford Teaching Hospitals, we are proud to be part of the Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership (BDCHCP). In our local HCP we have a joint vision to act as one to keep people Happy, Healthy at Home.
