Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Midwife to apply for the position of Ante & Post natal Ward Manager. This is a 0.5 WTE job share for a 1 WTE role.

Torbay and South Devon NHS FT has an Obstetric Lead Labour Ward with 8 birthing rooms, one of which has a birth pool. There is also a freestanding birth centre in Newton Abbot. There is a mixed ante and post natal ward (John MacPherson) with a 20 bed capacity, including a shared bay for Transitional Care with our Neonatal service.

We are looking for an adaptable individual who has excellent interpersonal skills, works well as part of the multi-disciplinary team & has an ability to work under pressure, whilst moving the services forward.

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate previous experience of leadership and staff management skills with recent experience in maternity services and a sound understanding of the CQC and national assurance agenda.

Main duties of the job

  • Prioritises clinical workload, identifying the most critical needs, keeping staff and others focused through the shift
  • Proactively leads the clinical decision making process, which includes analysing information, in order to make effective decisions in complex situations
  • Monitor and manage sickness and absence of staff within the team implementing the TSDFT Policy, taking appropriate action if required.
  • Lead and facilitate the recruitment of staff for the Meridian Team
  • Plan, manage and organise human resources by efficient workforce planning, enabling the team to provide a quality service throughout the 24 hour period
  • Monitor progress of work, recognising changing priorities and implement corrective action within own limits and informing relevant people
