Vascular Access Clinical Support Worker

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a specialist team providing vascular access to the trust. The post holder will be responsible for providing a high quality holistic service for patients who require vascular access trust wide.You will be required to work a combination of weekday shifts, ensuring a smooth patient pathway from referral, insertion and training of patients (when applicable) to discharge.

Main duties of the job

  • Prioritising and scheduling of patients from in-patient wards, day case waiting list and outpatient referrals.
  • Expert practice in ultrasound guided venepuncture, insertion of cannulas, management of vascular access device associated complications.
  • Promoting clinical excellence in vascular access device care and acting as support for other healthcare professionals.
  • Staff education and assessment in the care and maintenance of vascular access devices.

Job responsibilities

Responsible for the delivery of excellent clinical care within the vascular access team in close collaboration with the non-registered and registered nursing team and medical teams.

Receive and process referrals, requiring a reasonable depth of knowledge around vascular access and vessel health preservation to safely and effectively prioritise patient bookings into vascular access clinic lists.

Pre-assess patients vascular access requirements, support patients who attend for PICC insertion and those who may present with treatment related complications.

Effectively use ultrasound to take bloods and cannulate patients with challenging vascular access.

Participate in infection control audits of PICCs and weekly surveillance of inpatients with PICCs.

Participate in the delivery of staff educational programmes to improve knowledge and safety of central venous access devices.
