Ophthalmology Clinical Fellow

Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic Clinical Fellow in Ophthalmology, with a specialist interest in cataract surgery to join our team at Torbay Hospital. This post is to complement our upcoming workforce changes whilst we expand our department. This is a 12 month fixed term position working 10 PA's per week.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post and will include cataract, general, urgent referral as well as specialist clinics, and access to surgery theatre lists. There would be a 1 in 8 first on-call commitment with prospective cover for colleagues leave, this is non-resident. There is a separate sub regional vitreoretinal on-call. Secretarial support will be provided for the period of the post with computer access and tray provided in resource room on level 1.

About us

We are a forward thinking, very well equipped and supported department who provide a very wide range of ophthalmic services including vitreo-retinal surgery, medical retina including uveitis, oculo-plastics including lacrimal surgery and specialist thyroid clinics, glaucoma, corneal services PK, DALK, DSAEK and DMEK, paediatric services, adult motility and cataract surgery.

We have a talented and enthusiastic body of nurses, orthoptists and optometrists trained to work in glaucoma, paediatrics, cornea, diabetic and macular clinics, perform botox injections, treat lid cysts and perform electrolysis, give intravitreal injections and provide sub-tenon blocks for cataract surgery.

The orthoptists and optometrists are involved in LogMAR vision testing, refraction and patient assessment for the macular service including research studies. We also have a full time ophthalmic photographer and a dedicated research nurse. We have an optometrist with contact lens experience, and have experienced sessional optometrists supporting the paediatric and macular services. Our talented orthoptic department provide an enhanced service including paediatric LVA, a service for adult learning disabled patients, stroke rehabilitation and support for the macular, diabetic, cornea, glaucoma and paediatric clinics. We have highly trained and accredited orthoptists and optometrists in virtual medical retina, diabetic retina and macular clinics, and orthoptic led in-school vision screening scheme.

  • Part 1 FRCOphth or Parts 1 & 2 MRCOphth or an equivalent overseas qualification.
  • Full GMC Registration (with licence to practice).
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS or graduate of a UK Medical School.

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification

  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of ophthalmic problems both emergency and elective.
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need.
