Job summary
Torbay and South Devon Surgical Unit, Torbay Hospital is looking to appoint 2 surgical LEDs (F2 / CT equivalent) for a period of 12 months. The posts will be supporting Urology, Lower GI surgery and Upper GI surgery
All posts will have access to a funded e-portfolio.
All posts have educational supervision equivalent to any doctor in training, with a named educational supervisor and regular meetings
Main duties of the job
To be an enthusiastic member of the surgical team attending and participating with ward rounds
Active member of the firm, supervising and supporting F1 doctors with all aspects of inpatient care including discharges
Be a pro-active member of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure excellent and well co-ordinated patient care
Develop clinical knowledge through attendance at weekly timetabled educational meetings
Develop teaching skills through the supervision of medical students rotating through the firms
Have opportunity for career development through the opportunity to attend relevant courses and to prepare for relevant exams
Co-operate with personnel department when monitoring work hours and other issues
Attend trust induction

On call requirements will vary depending on the specific clinical area and rota. This will be on a 1:13 / 1:14 composing of on call days, nights on call, twilight shifts and weekend working on a compliant junior doctor rota. Expect to attend surgical hot-week handover meetings to present new patients assessed as part of the on-call.
As part of the on-call component there is a 7-day CEPOD week, dedicated exclusively to assisting on emergency general surgical patients. Providing ample opportunities for teaching and training. This also includes a week of dedicated CEPOD theatre time.

- Full GMC with licence to practice, completion of F1 training, ALS training or equivalent
- Competent in basic clinical and surgical procedures, able to support general surgery on call, aware of own limitations
- Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection, ability to assess, recognise, and initiate management of acutely ill patient and play an effective part in advanced life support
- Able to communicate effectively in written and spoken English, able to communicate effectively in a medical context, able to discuss treatment options with patients and carers in a way they can understand
- Understand the responsibilities of being an employee of the NHS, Effective team working skills, Demonstrate innovation and problem-solving abilities
- Standing for long periods of time, Ability to deal with emotional, frightened or hostile patients. Sometimes face to face, Ability to deal with telephone calls from patients and relatives, Deal with patient requests and complaints, Prolonged concentration
Desirable
- 12 months continuous experience within the NHS, experience of Foundation Training, Knowledge of UK health systems, practices and values; awareness of current issues in the NHS
- Computer literate, Understands the importance and impact of information systems in healthcare, Ability to practice evidence-based medicine, Evidence of continuous professional development
