Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our existing Maternity Support Worker (MSW) team. As an MSW, you will work closely with our Midwifery team to deliver a high standard of safe, evidence based care. You will care for pregnant people, postnatal people and new born babies. This post can be from 23 hours p/w up to 37.5 hours p/w.
Preferred hours to be discussed at interview.

Main duties of the job
- To undertake observations of service user and babies and report to the Midwife
- To support service user to establish feeding for their new born baby and to facilitate informed choice
- To carry out additional tasks as delegated by the Registered Midwife, once appropriate training has been given be able to complete all documentation and inform the Midwife of findings:
- Undertake venepuncture and cannulation
- Process umbilical cord pH
- Neonatal heel prick sampling
- Blood glucose monitoring in service users and neonates

We have an 8 room Labour Ward with a designated Bereavement Suite, a 19 bed Ante/Postnatal ward. the facilities also include a 2 room Midwife Led Birth Centre in Newton Abbot Hospital.

- Provide reassurance to new parents and birthing partners when necessary

- Assisting with the undertaking and implementation of risk assessments
- Organise own workload and prioritise care
- Carry out routine observations and blood tests as directed and documenting as required
- Assist with chaperoning the Obstetric/Medical staff
- Carry out acquired nursing skills as directed, documenting care in the Electronic Patient Record
- Be aware of the emotional, social and physical needs of the service user reporting to the Midwife
- Only uses equipment following appropriate training and competency is maintained
- Applies knowledge and skills of the Trusts Health and Safety Policy to clinical practice
- Adheres to the Trust Violence and Aggression Policies to ensure personal and Maternity staffs safety
- Uphold the safety of the service user within the Clinical Governance framework
