Job summary
Torbay and South Devon Upper GI Unit, Torbay Hospital is looking to appoint a candidate to the Royal College of Surgeons approved Upper GI Surgical Fellowship for a period of 12 months.
The department is involved in General Surgery on call, providing a parallel Upper GI on-call rota dealing with a wide range of emergency Upper GI surgical problems.
Main duties of the job
This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who wishes to develop their advanced upper GI laparoscopic skill prior to taking a consultant position, particularly in relation to advanced hiatal surgery (Fundoplication/Heller's Myotomy/Giant Para-oesophageal hernia repair). There would be opportunity for the candidate to start or develop their laparoscopic bile duct exploration skills. The post will allow the development of skills and decision making in emergency Upper GI surgery at consultant level. There is a large amount of research/publication opportunity and the post provides a computer and office to support this.

There is a benign Upper GI MDT for management of complex benign hepatobiliary/oesophago-gastric and long term nutrition access disorders.
The Department delivers a Magnetic Sphincter Augmentation (LINX) service and trains in the procedure
We run Royal College of Surgeons accredited Advanced Laparoscopic Upper GI Surgical Courses in Bile Duct Exploration and Hiatal Hernia surgery, British Benign Upper GI Society (BBUGSS) website. We are looking to expand our course portfolio.
The Department also has an advance pH/Manometry service, offering high resolution manometry and BRAVO

The hospital itself is situated on the outskirts of Torquay approximately 1.5 miles from the Town Centre, 4 miles from Newton Abbot and 2 miles from the sea. Plymouth and Exeter are within easy travelling distance.

This post offers the opportunity to develop the candidates understanding, surgical experience and skills in pre-, intra- and post-operative management of these patients.
One week in 10 (moving to 1:11) is Hot-Week covering emergency surgery this is well-structured with a team based system. Supporting the on call team is two surgical house officers whose shifts are spread, two ambulatory fellows, one physician associate, two SHOs, one middle grade and two consultants (UGI and LGI).
The post would be part of the general surgical on-call rota 1:10 (moving to 1:11) and have regular access to Upper GI elective and emergency lists
