Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join and develop a non-medical Endoscopist role within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
You will develop into the role of an Independent Nurse Endoscopist performing initially lower gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures with potential further development of skills to include upper gastrointestinal procedures according to set protocols and guidelines of the trust and British Society of Gastroenterology
Taking part in assessing care needs of patients and referring for further investigations or consultation as appropriate, participate in clinical research, audit and contribute to the development of knowledge / education in line with JAG, GRS, BSG quality standards and ensure that national, regional and local guidelines are implemented, whilst continually monitoring the quality of care provision.
** This post is subject to interview with Health Education England to confirm suitability for completion of JAG accredited Non-Medical Nurse Endoscopist Qualification**
This must be successfully completed in order to progress to a band 7 post
Main duties of the job
- To successfully complete the in-house training programme and Joint Advisory Group recognised Clinical / Non-Medical Nurse Endoscopist course to be able to perform Gastrointestinal Endoscopy procedures according to local and national protocols as an independent practitioner
- To be responsible for performing lower gastrointestinal procedures with the possibility to extend skills
- Undertake at least 4 clinical sessions per week
- Perform diagnostic and some therapeutic endoscopy procedures as appropriate, informing patients of additional investigations and follow up needs. Requesting further investigations as clinically indicated
- To undertake additional clinical lists in the absence of other Endoscopists
- To be aware of own boundaries and assess patient suitability for procedure to be undertaken by a Nurse Endoscopist
- To administering medications as required via an agreed PGD or after the completion of a non-medical prescribing qualification in accordance with the NMC, BSG and trust guidelines
- To be responsible for recording and reporting all clinical findings, in a timely manner, including follow up, referral and pathways
- Discuss and inform patients of indication for investigation
- To take part in thorough consultations including the consenting process, informing patients of benefits, risks, possible additional procedures and alternative procedures as appropriate
