Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic applicant to join our small, friendly and supportive GU medicine team for a period of 12 months to cover maternity leave. This would suit a newly qualified consultant looking for experience at consultant level, as well as more established consultants. The job would include:

  • Delivering high quality integrated Sexual Health, HIV and Contraception care
  • Sharing responsibility for the day to day management of the Sexual Health department via high quality leadership and effective team working
  • Teaching, training and supervision of trainee doctors, nurses and other staff
  • Participating in audit, research, and quality improvement processes

Main duties of the job

The postholder will undertake regular Sexual Health and HIV clinics. The service is integrated to the degree that a intermediate level of contraception knowledge is required but there will not be an expectation to manage complex contraception or to fit coils or implants. The principal requirement for clinical face to face input is currently sited at Castle Circus Health Centre in Torquay town centre, with remote consultation clinics worked either on site or at home. The postholder will be expected to participate in a variety of professional activities (SPA) to support personal clinical practice and the overall work of the department and Trust. The appointee will receive 1.0 SPA sessions for generic non-clinical work. The purpose of this allocation includes, but is not limited to:

  • Appraisals, job planning and revalidation
  • Personal and professional development, including service development
  • Professional administration, including related correspondence
  • Clinical supervision of junior staff and other educational activities
  • Governance and quality improvement activities
  • Departmental meetings

You will work closely with other medical staff, allied health professionals and non-clinical colleagues both within the department and in other specialties. The service forms part of the Peninsula HIV network and participation in monthly network meetings to discuss complex HIV and PrEP cases is encouraged.

Planning and organisation

Time management and prioritisation skills will be needed to effectively manage clinical workload.

Analytical and judgement

The post holder will be able to deliver high quality clinical care and clinical oversight for the service, supervising trainee doctors and nursing staff

Responsibility for patient care

The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner for most aspects of delivery of care within the fields of Sexual Health and HIV.

Policy and service responsibility

It is anticipated that the post holder will contribute to service development both locally in Torbay and also within the wider Devon Sexual Health network (which incorporates Exeter and Barnstaple Sexual Health clinics).

Responsibility for finance, equipment and other resources

The postholder will provide efficient and effective care that is consistent with local public health priorities

Responsibility for supervision, leadership and management

The department has 2 trainee doctors (3 x 4 month placements) and both year 3 and year 5 medical students on placement during the year. It is anticipated that the post holder will contribute fully to supporting their training but there will no requirement for formal clinical or educational supervision.

Information technology and administrative duties

A willingness to engage with new developments in information technology would be useful. We are hoping to switch from LILIE EPR to Inform EPR in Spring 2024.

Responsbility for research and development

There are research opportunities within the service and a supportive Trust research team, should the appointee wish to participate in research. The NIHR STI Research Champion for the South West Peninsula is based within the Devon Sexual Health service.
