Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a part time (12 months) simulation research post at Torbay Hospital South Devon on behalf of Health Education England. The post would involve working towards creation of a surgical simulator with 3D modelling to include orchidopexy, open appendicectomy and open inguinal hernia repair. The majority of training can be delivered off site with e learning and MSteams meetings. However a small proportion of the time will need to be spent face to face at Torbay Hospital.

The successful candidate would take time away from their clinical post with 50% of their full time salary being paid by Health Education England through their parent trust educational contract.

The post includes e- learning for Fusion 360 a 3D modelling programme through from basics to intermediary level including slicing. Access and links to an industrial medical grade 3D printer. In the aspiration of creation of the above simulator.

The post holder will also be expected to support the Peninsula Surgical education programme and the COVID recovery programme for surgical trainees by implementation of simulation in surgery.

We offer an ambulatory service at Torbay hospital which manages an average take of 20 ambulatory patients and an average take of 20 patient referrals per day. We have two ambulatory fellows that assist five days a week with the ambulatory component of the on call.

The on-call team is well supported Monday to Friday with 2 physician associates, two on call SHO, two on call house officers and 2 Consultants (one UGI and one LGI).

This post attracts an on-call supplement per annum.

All Registrar level surgeons are involved in all teams and share the on-call service with compliant shift patterns.

Take part in rostered emergency work

Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled.

Attend outpatient clinics.

Attend operating lists for both emergency and elective cases

The expectation is for the successful applicant to work clinically 2.5 days a week and and 2.5 days a week will be dedicated academic time. Clinical time would include theatre, outpatients and endoscopy training.

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Successful completion of MRCS by examination by day after results for May 2022 examination diet are released.
  • Be eligble for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date.
  • Have evidence of achievement of foundation competencies from a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or equivalent, in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice.
  • Be eligible to work in the UK.
  • Evidence of CT/ST1 competences in core surgery at the time of application and CT/ST2 competences in core surgery by time of appointment. Acceptable evidence includes satisfactory ARCP outcome of completion of of Core Surgical Training Programme of Certificate of Readiness to Enter Higher Surgical Training.
  • Capacity to apply sound knowledge and judgement to problems.
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need.
  • Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement.
  • Validated logbook document of surgical exposure to date.
