Job summary

To provide a comprehensive waste collection service for Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust on all waste streams.

Main duties of the job

  • Good basic education and knowledge of waste procedures.

  • Ability to deal with difficult and stressful situations and remain calm in an emergency.

  • Experience of working with the general public.

  • Provide a comprehensive 7 day waste service on a rotational basis.
  • To assist in the induction and training of new staff.
  • To ensure Health and Safety regulations are carried out at all times.
  • To comply with the Trusts personnel policies and procedures.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • In an emergency assist with spillages across the estate and to be trained in the disposal of the waste generated.
  • To report spillages or damage to the appropriate ward/department.
  • On a rotational basis to undertake litter picking across the acute site.
  • To collect anatomical waste for processing as required.
  • To ensure safe delivery of clinical/general waste to the waste collection points.
  • Ensure that Clinical waste is passed through the radioactivity detector on entry to the clinical waste storage area.
  • Where relevant, monitor collection of waste by external contractors and ensure relevant paper work is completed.
  • To maintain an appropriate rotation of clinical waste bins within the compound.
  • To ensure that any problems with waste streams are reported promptly to the Waste Services Supervisor.
  • To ensure that Waste items are cleared from the Trust sites in a timely manner ensuring the highest hygiene and health and safety measures are maintained.
  • To maintain a polite approach at all times to all patients, visitors and staff members.
  • Plan and prioritise own and others workload, as part of the Waste team, according to the daily requirements and direct supervision.
  • To ensure that the departments equipment is cleaned regularly and any faults detected are reported to the Site Services supervisor immediately.
  • Transport soiled linen and waste on a frequent basis.
  • Record information as required.
  • Process all waste streams within the Waste Compound using the appropriate equipment including light and heavy machinery.
  • To provide a comprehensive litter picking service across site, empty all external public waste bins periodically clean public shelters and signage on an ad hoc basis.
  • To ensure that paths and entrances are free from debris such as cigarette ends, leaves and rainwater drain covers ad hoc basis.
  • To assist with the gritting and snow clearance of the estate and highway surfaces during periods of inclement weather.
  • To ensure that requests to carry out other duties, by the nominated supervisors, are carried out in a professional and prompt manner.
  • To undertake cleaning of waste bins on a weekly basis using the appropriate equipment supplied
  • To undertake any other duties as required by the Waste Services Supervisor.
  • To ensure that any faults with equipment are promptly reported to nominated supervisor.
  • Correct use and storage of vehicles equipment and materials in line with department policy, health and safety legislation and COSHH regulations.
  • Locking/unlocking of yard, doors, windows and turning on/off lights. Safe and correct use and storage of keys/ID card.
