An opportunity has arisen to join our friendly Cellular Pathology department at Torbay Hospital situated at the heart of the beautiful South Devon Coast. We are seeking to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced Laboratory Manager to oversee the running of the Histology, Diagnostic Cytology and Mortuary services.The department is fully automated and is equipped with the Roche Vantage tracking system, 2 x Roche Ultra immunostainers and a Sakura Prisma H+E stainer. The department currently processes approximately 20,000 surgical cases per year and is UKAS accredited.The Trust is also embarking on the 'Building Brighter Future' initiative to provide a new hospital. As part of the hospital build Cellular Pathology will move to a new purpose-built laboratory on the Torbay hospital site and the Cellular Pathology team are currently involved in this design project. In addition, plans to implement a new LIMS system and Digital Pathology are underway in collaboration with neighbouring Trusts in the South West area.
South Devon is an area of exceptional natural beauty (for instance Dartmoor is close by), with outstanding opportunities for both dry-land and water-based activities, and has a very mild climate.
The core hours of the department are 08:30 to 17:00 with an early shift at 07:30 Monday to Friday.
Main duties of the job
Responsible for:
- The management of the Histology, Diagnostic Cytology, Mortuary, and clerical sections of the Histopathology Department
- The assessment and selection of consumables for all three areas
- Health and Safety, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), UKAS Accreditation and risk assessments for the department
- Implementation of procedures to handle workload increases and increase efficiency
- Maintenance and replacement of equipment within the department
- Monitoring of workload in all three areas by designing and maintaining spreadsheets to show annual increases and track workload changes
- Departmental fabric - currently upkeep of present structure and involvement in the planning of a new department within the proposed rebuild - utilising previous experience and computer aided design software
- Construction of and maintenance of word documents, spreadsheets and Q Pulse to enable ease of accessibility to information within the department for audit and document control purposes
About us
The Department of Cellular pathology has a total workload of 21,000 surgical requests annually. In addition, 100 frozen sections, 75 skin immunofluorescence and 14,000 immunocytochemistry tests are performed.
Diagnostic Cytology receives 1,500 requests. Mortuary 500 post mortems and handles 2,000 deceased annually.

- Accountable to the Consultant Pathologist Head of Department and thence to the Clinical Director of Laboratory Medicine
- Good lines of communication should be encouraged between staff within the Pathology Department, colleagues employed in other Pathology laboratories and other members of Trust staff as appropriate
- External communications between GP surgeries and other laboratories are also required

Planning and organisation
- Attendance / performance of mandatory training
- Maintain an up to date knowledge of professional matters by attendance at meetings, conferences where possible

Responsibility and accountability
Responsible for:
- External Quality Assurance (EQA) membership of the department and monitoring its performance, ensuring External Quality Assurance material is handled appropriately by relevant staff

- The compiling, production, review and implementation of departmental protocols and standard operating procedures in accordance with UKAS and HTA standards, legislative and NHS regulatory/ legislative frameworks principally using Q Pulse

- Correct and secure storage of documentation
- Ensuring that all reagents / consumables / equipment used for the provision of the histology service are checked and monitored according to UKAS guidelines

- Completion and authorisation of Mortuary procedures including inquest details, consent, storage details and documentation within the Pathology computer system
- Provision of autopsy and tissue retention data to HTA on an annual and as requested basis
Technical
- Assisting in the department when staffing levels are low or when workload is higher than expected
- Performance of dissection of all surgical specimens in groups A and B (Royal College of Pathologists)
