Tier 1 Practitioner in Neonatal Intensive Care
(Junior Clinical Fellow/ST1-3 OR Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner)
Applications are invited a colleague to join our team on the Tier 1 rota in Neonatal Intensive Care. This post would be suitable for a resident doctor at ST1-3 / junior clinical fellow level, or for an Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP), to commence from March 2026.
The resident doctor post is for a period of 6 months, potentially extendable up to 2 years by mutual agreement. The ANNP post is offered as a permanent position.
Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified candidate to receive training and experience in tertiary level neonatal intensive care. The regional NICU at St Michael's Hospital provides regional tertiary neonatal intensive care for medical patients and supra-regional services for infants with surgical, neurosurgical and cardiac problems. It also acts as the base unit for the regional South West Neonatal Advice and Retrieval (SONAR) team.
This post would be suitable as a stand-alone fellowship or as as secondment or out-of-programme experience. St Michael's NICU is an exciting and dynamic unit, covering all aspects of neonatal care and has a strong ethos of inclusion and development of our staff.

Essential
- At least 6 months' experience in Paediatrics at ST level (not including Foundation modules) OR at least 12 months experience in a speciality allied to neonatal medicine (anaesthetics, obstetrics, paediatric surgery)
Desirable
- Previous tertiary level neonatal experience
Skills and Abilities
Essential
- Applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients with patients and colleagues
- Computer Literate
- Experience of and willingness to participate in teaching of other professionals
Desirable
- Evidence of neonatal airway skills at 'standard' level (as per BAPM framework) or above
- Experience in a range of neonatal procedures
Qualifications and Training
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
- Is up to date with training and fit to practice
Desirable
- Success in MRCPCH Part 1A/B and Part 2 or equivalent
- Newborn life support qualification (NLS, EPALS, ARNI)
- Training in research and/or improvement methodology
