Band 5 Weston Oncology & Haematology Day Unit Registered Nurse for 16 hours per week

The Oncology & Haematology Day Unit at Weston General Hospital is a friendly, small but busy day unit that offers an out-patient service to patients receiving treatments for cancer & haematology disorders. We are seeking an experienced Systemic Anti-cancer Therapy (SACT) administration nurse.

The applicant must be a registered nurse with an interest in oncology & haematology nursing. Experience in the administration of chemotherapy, cannulation and venepuncture and completion of the UKONS SACT passport is desirable but not essential. Support and guidance with a supervised learning package in the administration of chemotherapy will be given if required. This exciting vacancy could be an excellent development post for those wishing to expand their knowledge and expertise in this area, which is both demanding but extremely rewarding.

In partnership with other professionals and disciplines, develop measurable patient care plans/goals. The process should include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care from admission to discharge.

  • Ensure nursing documentation is maintained, accurate and timely in line with the Trust standard
  • Develop knowledge and awareness of the care and management of oncological emergencies and toxicity side effects i.e. neutropenic sepsis, malignant spinal cord compression, tumour lysis and anaphylaxis
  • Be expert and skilled in cannulation, venepuncture & venesection
  • Triage patients effectively using the UKONS triage tool and refer via appropriate pathway
  • Manage care of the patient with a central venous access device (CVAD)
  • Attend and contribute to 1 in 4 OHDU team meetings
    • Demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards. To work towards promoting this to others.
    • Promote and maintain a safe environment for patient:
    • Promote a clean environment and the prevention of hospital acquired infection
    • Respond positively and act promptly to resolve problems/issues for patients/carers, utilising complaints procedures and PALs where appropriate.
    • Identify record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with UHBristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.

    Participate in the collection of audit and research data as required.

    Support the ward sister / charge nurse with effective use of resources e.g. staffing, supplies, stores.

    Work with senior nurses to develop management skills.

    Maintain registration and revalidation with the Nursing and Midwifery council (NMC)
