Nurse Practitioner / Nurse Manager – Postpartum Contraception

Job summary

The Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Manager for Postpartum Contraception combines managerial responsibilities and an advanced clinical workload. As part of a team, you will be accountable and responsible for the day-to-day clinical leadership and operational management of the Bristol Postpartum Contraception Service, working across UHBW and North Bristol NHS Trust. You will promote and monitor safe, effective practice, enhance patient experience, and contribute to the delivery of Trust/Service objectives.

The Nurse Practitioner / Nurse Manager for Postpartum Contraception will:

  • Be responsible for delivering high quality, responsive, safe, efficient, compassionate care.
  • Act as a leader and role model, adopting a flexible approach in a role which encompasses leadership, management and clinical responsibilities.
  • Support the Matron in developing the service, through teaching, audit and research, and policy development.
  • Provide expert clinical support to nursing staff and junior medical staff.
  • Be responsible and accountable for the total care of patients, independent of medical practitioners.
  • Fit contraceptive progestogen-only implants (essential) and intrauterine devices (desirable - training offered).

Main duties of the job

Clinical Leadership & Operational ManagementProvide day-to-day leadership and manage the Postpartum Contraception Service across UHBW and NBT .

Deliver High-Quality Care & Role Model LeadershipEnsure safe, efficient, responsive, and compassionate care for all patients. Act as a professional role model, demonstrating flexibility.

Service DevelopmentSupport the Matron in service development through teaching, audit, research, and policy creation.

Expert Clinical SupportProvide specialist advice and guidance to clinical staff regarding all forms of contraception.

Contraceptive Procedures

Insert and remove contraceptive progestogen-only implants (essential) and intrauterine devices (or work towards competency in these skills).

Health Promotion & EducationDeliver evidence-based advice to patients, and advice and teaching to colleagues, on contraception and related topics.

Staff Supervision & DevelopmentSupervise staff and students, ensuring mentorship, performance reviews, and professional development.

Resource & Budget ManagementManage staffing, resources, and budgets effectively to maintain safe and efficient service delivery.

Governance & Quality AssuranceEnsure compliance with clinical governance, patient safety standards, and Trust policies, including incident and complaint management.

Research & Continuous ImprovementPromote audit and research, evaluate service impact, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
