Seahorse Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Are you an experienced PICU nurse looking for a new role. The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) is looking for experienced band 5 nurses to come and work in its 18 bedded level 3 PICU. The PICU at BRHC is the lead centre for paediatric intensive care in the Southwest region of England. The region extends from Cheltenham in the north, Swindon in the east, and to Truro in the south; and encompasses a paediatric population of 933,000 children under the age of 16 years that increases significantly during the holiday seasons.

The PICU provides a tertiary service for all paediatric sub specialities:

Trauma

Burns

Neurosurgery

General Surgery

Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery

Renal Transplant

Respiratory

ENT

Metabolic Medicine

Neurology

Haematology and Oncology

Endocrinology

Gastroenterology

Infectious Diseases.

It also provides supra regional critical care support to the children with congenital heart disease in South Wales with WATCh supporting the critical care transport requirements for this population. The PICU works in close collaboration with its neighbouring PICU at University Hospital Wales and is the Level 3 centre as part of the Southwest Paediatric Critical Network.

This is an interesting and exciting opportunity for an experienced PIC nurse to join the team.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care

Communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality with patient's carers and the multi-disciplinary team. Give written and verbal advice/teaching to patients and carers.

Provide accurate timely contemporary records of care and treatment in line with UHBristol & Weston record keeping policy and NMC.

Working within Trust Nursing policies and procedures and professional boundaries undertake all appropriate aspects of Nursing Care required including specific relevant clinical skills gained following appropriate training instruction.

Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients:

  • Administer medicines in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Promote a clean environment and the prevention of hospital acquired infections.

Respond positively and act promptly to resolve problems/issues for patients/carers, utilising complaints procedures and PALs where appropriate.

Assist with the smooth running of the clinical area by carrying out other duties such as unpacking stores, tidying and cleaning up equipment.
