Main duties of the job

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care needs from admission to timely transfer or discharge.

Work as part of the nursing team & MDT to ensure safe, efficient patient flow and management

Develop skills to become responsible and accountable for the total patient care of a critically ill patient or group of patients

Act as professional role model/team leader setting standards of practice promoting clinical effectiveness and opportunities for teaching others as part of a 24hour service

Essential

  • RN (NMC registered) / or NVQ 3 Operating Department Practice pre 2004 or Diploma in Higher Education Operating Department Practice post 2004
  • Current NMC registration / or current Health Professions Council registration for ODPs
  • Post registration experience in ED preferred

Desirable

  • Work towards relevant university accredited post basic study programmes Eg: A&E course, ITU course, Care of the Elderly, PICU, Renal, Oncology, etc

Knowledge

Essential

  • Current employment as an RN
  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical nursing practice within a hospital environment
  • Interest in the clinical area
  • Experience of teaching

Desirable

  • Experience in resus & triage
  • Experience of taking charge

Skills

Essential

  • Demonstrate competence in clinical skills relevant to the clinical area
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and MDT
  • Computer skills
  • Competence in calculations for safe administration of medicines/fluids
  • Ability to take the lead, initiate and ensure appropriate action in response to the deteriorating patient
