Job summary
We are looking for one experienced Physician Associate to join our Acute Medicine team at Bristol Royal Infirmary. The post holder will rotate across our Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Clinic (SDEC) and the medical take, working at all times under the supervision of an Acute Medicine Consultant to provide exemplary care to the people of Bristol and its surrounding areas. The PA role is well embedded within the department, with excellent support from the Acute Medicine team and wider MDT. The post holder will join our existing team of 20 PAs within University Hospitals Bristol and Weston, benefiting from a well-established supervisory and educational model. All applicants must hold a valid qualification in Physician Associate Studies and be registered with the General Medical Council to be considered for this post.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work under the clinical supervision of an Acute Medicine Consultant to deliver timely and safe care to patients. They will be required to:
- Clinically assess and examine a broad caseload of medical patients with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge
- Competently interpret diagnostic tests and imaging and appropriately act upon the result, including timely escalation to senior clinicians
- Conduct daily ward rounds with the Acute Medicine team
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under appropriate supervision and in line with current trust guidelines on procedural skills
- Fully integrate within the multidisciplinary team, communicating with other healthcare professionals
- Make complex referrals to appropriate specialists and enact their advice promptly
- Provide health and well-being counselling to patients and their relatives
- Contribute to the development of efficient care pathways following current best practices and national guidelines
- Accurately document all aspects of patient care
- Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including the completion of discharge summaries
