University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW)

Locum Consultant in Hepatology

The closing date is 22 October 2025

Job summary

University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for a 6-month Locum Consultant position within the Hepatology Department. The successful candidate will join a well-established team of Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists working in the Division of Medicine, with a flexible approach that supports both specialist interests and a healthy work-life balance.

Main duties of the job

This is a six-month locum appointment for a Consultant Hepatologist, aimed at improving waiting times for our general hepatology outpatient service and supporting patients identified through our community liver health check programme, "Alright My Liver".

The department currently consists of six Consultant Hepatologists and seven Gastroenterologists. The post will be primarily based at Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), with additional outpatient clinics at Weston General Hospital and endoscopy sessions at South Bristol Community Hospital. The successful applicant will be expected to work across all three sites.

Specialist accreditation (CCT or equivalent) in Gastroenterology-Hepatology is essential, and accreditation in General Internal Medicine is desirable.

Applicants will be required to participate in the BRI emergency endoscopy on-call rota (currently 1 in 10) and must be competent in therapeutic upper GI endoscopy. Independent practice in lower GI endoscopy is desirable but not essential.

There is no requirement for regular inpatient work, although occasional support for gastroenterology-hepatology in-reach may be needed.

The hepatology department is supported by an extensive team of dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialists, for whom the post-holder will provide regular supervision.
