Job summary

Clinical Fellow in Oncology and Haematology

UH Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust seeks to appoint Clinical Fellows in Oncology and Haematology. The successful candidates will spend 80% of their time in the Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre (BHOC) Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit, performing clinical duties, and 20% of their time in other areas of BHOC, attending specialist outpatient clinics, working with the inpatient team or working on other non-clinical professional development, such as clinical audits or quality improvement projects.

These posts were successfully introduced in 2016. They were created to give trainees the opportunity to spend time developing skills and knowledge in haematology & oncology. There is no on call commitment, but post holders may be required to provide medical cover to the acute assessment unit on bank holidays, paid at additional trust rates.

There is also an expectation that during the clinical block the post holder may be required to provide cross cover to the oncology/haematology wards to cover leave.

Main duties of the job

The clinical job is based in the BHOC. BHOC includes specialist oncology and haematology inpatient wards with radioisotope rooms, allogeneic bone marrow transplant facilities, a regional dedicated teenage and young adult unit, an out- patient chemotherapy unit, out- patient clinics, and a radiotherapy department which included the highest state-of-the-art radiotherapy (including both intra- and extra-cranial radiosurgery and brachytherapy). The oncology & haematology SDEC unit is staffed by 1-2 doctors Monday - Friday 9-9, as well as advanced nurse practitioners and specialist nursing staff. This unit provides acute assessment of side effects of those receiving active oncological and haematological treatment, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The post holder would work within the BHOC-SDEC and would be expected to manage acute oncological and haematological emergencies as well as developing a greater understanding of the treatment of cancer and the management of its treatment. They would also be expected to medically review patients in the Chemotherapy Day Unit and radiotherapy departments as required. This post is supported by oncology and haematology registrars and the consultants.
