Job summary

Optometrists provide clinical care in association with medical staff and Orthoptists, undertaking clinical management decisions regarding patients with vision problems which require a specialist optometric approach to their care. Optometrists are expected to take on extended roles including, the co-management of children and the monitoring of patients with keratoconus (and post corneal collagen cross-linkingpatients) in the corneal clinic. Optometrists are expected to take on a high level of individual professional responsibility and efficiency within clinical optometry, and develop a breadth and depth of knowledge, skills and experience.Optometrists are expected to undertake, after suitable training, advanced, specialised, complex and non-routine work, with responsibility for patient examination and complex clinical decision making regarding ongoing management of patients with a wide range of diseases.

Main duties of the job

  • To deliver a comprehensive range of core optometric services and aspecialised range of extended role services to the highest standards of quality and care at Bristol Eye Hospital as well as our out-reach clinics: at the University of the West of England (UWE) Weston and peripheral clinics within the community.
  • To work as an autonomous practitioner in providing optometric assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages, ranging from pre-term babies to the elderly, and who have varying communication skills
  • To participate in the delivery of certain more complex specialist optometric services that meet the changing needs of the service
  • To undertake specific administrative duties as agreed with the Clinical Leads and management
  • To undertake clinical audit and research as agreed with the ClinicalLead
  • To provide optometric teaching and training at undergraduate andpostgraduate levels for various disciplines within ophthalmology.

  • BSc(hons) In optometry or recognised by GOC equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Optical Council (GOC)

Desirable

  • Masters degree and/or approved additional qualifications in related optometric subbjects
  • Independent prescriber

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Clinical knowledge of Ophthalmic conditions and care
  • Knowledge of technical skills within ophthalmology, in posterior and anterior segment examinations
  • Experience of working as an autonomous practitioner

Desirable

  • Theoretical and practical ophthalmic knowledge of a range of work procedures and practices
  • Experience in paediatric optometry
  • Experience working in hospital optometry

  • Excellent interpersonal skills: verbal , written and electronic
