Job summary

We are seeking a dedicated and accomplished professional to oversee the Sleep and Lung Function teams at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The Sleep unit serves an extensive geographical area and is committed to providing diagnostic and therapeutic services in accordance with the NICE guidelines.

Our scope of practice encompasses a wide array of diagnostic assessments, including oximetry, respiratory polygraphy, polysomnography with optional MSLT/MWT, and Actigraphy. Furthermore, we oversee the care of a substantial patient cohort utilising auto-CPAP therapy, and we maintain robust collaborations with Bristol Dental Hospital and the ENT department at UHBW. Furthermore, Lung Function unit delivers a range of lung function testing to the respiratory department and Trust, including an asthma diagnostic pathway and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Main duties of the job

As the appointed service lead, you will assume the pivotal role of overseeing the day-to-day operations of the services. Your responsibilities will encompass the efficient management of our workflow, the coordination of staff, and the assurance of seamless patient care delivery.

Independently perform, assess, analyse, interpret, and report a wide spectrum of both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic techniques.

Working closely with Senior Physiologists to collaboratively design, plan, and execute ongoing educational and training programs tailored to the specific needs of the Sleep and Lung Function Unit staff, with a particular focus on those participating in national training schemes, apprenticeships, and Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) programs.

  • BSc/BA in Clinical Physiology or an appropriate subject or equivalent international qualification
  • Substantial clinical experience post qualification
  • AHCS or HCPC Registered or equivalent
  • Continuing evidence of CPD
  • RPGST/ESRS qualification

Desirable

  • MSc Respiratory Physiology or equivalent
  • Postgraduate qualifications in relevant subject or relevant specialist experience
  • Experience of PTP/STP Assessment programmes
  • Membership of ARTP or BSS

Skills and Abillities

Essential

  • combination of frequent light physical effort (carrying equipment 2 - 10 kg), occasional moderate physical effort (moving morbidly obese patients in wheelchairs) and frequent standing, kneeling or sitting in a restricted position
  • Highly developed physical skills where accuracy and/or speed are essential, and may include manipulation of fine tools, obtaining arterial/capillary blood gases or the assembly of specific complex circuitry
