Job summary

Scientific Computing (SciCom) provide a clinical and developmental IT service to the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC). Specifically, SciCom support and maintain clinical software solutions, in the form of in-house or commercially developed applications, enabling the provision of a state-of-the-art radiotherapy service for patients.

We work in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, radiographers, medical physicists, and clinical engineers to deliver solutions safely and according to specification. In support of these services, we provide and maintain our own subset of the Trust's IT infrastructure.

Hours of working may need to be flexible to reflect the needs of the department. The SciCom team have the option of working from home for up to 40% of their contracted hours.

Main duties of the job

  • Take a senior role in all aspects of the lifecycle of the department's diverse specialist systems: scoping and procurement; installation and commissioning; monitoring; performing routine maintenance and upgrades; backup, recovery, and data archiving.
  • Utilise appropriate project management tools in performing these tasks.
  • Provide second- and third-line support for major support issues, including liaising with clinical staff and vendors on a high technical level, ensuring safe restoration of service, and incident reporting.
  • Design and development of in-house of Oncology data applications.
  • Configure and maintain physical and virtualised servers hosting Oncology data applications and computing support systems.
  • Conduct internal audits to ensure contingency and disaster recovery plans are in place and up to date.
  • Maintain an awareness of the safety critical nature of working with Oncology hardware and software.
  • Create and maintain concise and accurate documentation of project wikis, departmental protocols, and problem resolutions.
  • Work closely with the Trust IT department to ensure correct implementation and maintenance of hospital IT infrastructure.
  • Provide applications training for other staff groups and correct software management processes, including cyber security.
  • Understand and apply relevant legislation and national standards e.g. Data Protection Act, Caldicott Principles and other professional and regulatory body reports and guidelines.

  • BSc in IT related discipline e.g. Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Post graduate specialist qualifications in IT or system management

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • In depth knowledge of Windows Server and Ubuntu operating systems
  • Experience with IP networking, computer security, and firewalls.
  • Experience administering prominent database engines (e.g. PostgreSQL, TSQL, MySQL)
  • Experience of infrastructure monitoring systems
  • Knowledge and experience of version control systems
  • Knowledge of change control processes and tools.

Desirable

  • Experience with server virtualisation such as VMWare
