Clinical Fellowship in Adult and Paediatric Haemoglobinopathy - South-West regional expert centre

Fixed term post for 12 months

1.0 WTE

Applications are invited for this unique training opportunity in all aspects of haemoglobinopathy care across both adult and paediatric services. Our centre is one of the 10 expert centres in sickle cell disease in England. In addition, we are a dedicated specialist centre for thalassaemia. The University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, rated 'good' by the CQC in 2021 and a major teaching and research centre for the South West.

We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor, with experience in haematology, to join an expanding Haemoglobinopathy service. This post will be based at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) and Bristol Children's Hospital and will suit individuals with experience in haematology who are looking to expand their knowledge of haemoglobinopathy. The post will provide clinical cover for the care of patients with sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and rare anaemias. Our centre is involved in several national projects and multi-disciplinary meetings; all these are a unique opportunity to gain more experience in this expert area and help shape the care nationally.

Main duties of the job

Duties will primarily cover the medical review of Haemoglobinopathy patients, predominantly during out-patient and day unit appointments in the adult and paediatric service. The applicant will be responsible for developing a quality improvement project covering centres in the South-West of England and setting up virtual clinics for patients in this area. The applicant will facilitate educational sessions for other health care professionals in the region. The applicant will also provide medical input regarding red cell exchange, transfusion, disease modifying therapy, iron chelation and clinical trials. Participation in research projects and writing papers is actively encouraged.

This post will be suitable for applicants who have previous experience in Haematology.
