Job summary
UHBW is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and clinically focussed individual as Consultants in Emergency Medicine. The appointee will join the existing dynamic consultant team comprising 22 substantive post holders who are committed to improving and advancing the quality of Emergency Care and training available locally and nationally. Initially this post is for a fixed term as a locum to support the department help support the BRI led role out of the CEMS programme.
The Emergency Department has recently scored Excellent for both Higher Specialist Training and GP Training, and has come a respectable 9th across the country for patient experience.
UHBW encompasses the Emergency Departments of Bristol Royal Infirmary, Weston General Hospital and Bristol Children's Hospital; this post will be based in the adult BRI ED service.
UHBW is one of the busiest EDs in the South West seeing over 100,000 adult and 40,000 paediatric attendances per year. The BRI attendances are of high acuity and reflect the broad spectrum attending an inner city ED which also serves a large tertiary referral centre for many specialities such as cardiology and cardiac surgery with 24 hour PCI available. There is separate 24-hour Middle Grade cover, a highly motivated and skilled Emergency nurse Practitioner service and an established physiotherapy practitioner service within the department.
Main duties of the job
Clinical: The appointee will be responsible for the reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and emergency treatment of patients presenting to the adult Emergency Department. They will also have clinical responsibilities within the ED SDEC and the Observation Unit.
There is close liaison with the ICU and inpatient specialist teams and patients referred to Specialist Units within the hospital are the responsibility of that specialist team, who may see the patient in the Emergency Department and arrange appropriate care.
Management and Leadership Responsibilities: The management responsibility of the post-holder will be to the Clinical Chair who is responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance: The successful appointee is expected to take a full role in the delivery of the Trust's wide agenda for Governance. On-Call Commitment:No on call commitment for the first three months of locum
Teaching and Training:This is a teaching Trust and the Consultant will teach medical students as part of the commitment of their Division to undergraduate education. On occasions, a practitioner may be asked to give lectures to healthcare professionals.
