Job summary

We are seeking to employ a Consultant in Oral Medicine (0.7wte) to join our existing oral medicine team. This post has been created to help with an increased growth in referral volume. The post-holder will primarily contribute to clinical service delivery of Oral Medicine. The department is situated within the Bristol Dental Hospital and is part of the Surgical Division of University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will complement the existing three NHS Consultants in Oral Medicine, X2 STR in Oral Medicine, and 2 Dental Core Trainees. The post-holder will work with colleagues from other specialties within the Dental Hospital and Bristol Royal Infirmary and also contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching within the specialty, in partnership and with appropriate honorary status sought from University of Bristol.

It is expected that the post-holders will complement the existing three Consultants in Oral Medicine. The successful candidate will be required to collaborate with colleagues from other specialities currently involved in Multi-Disciplinary Teams. The post holder should be willing to travel to and work in other sites necessitated by the role as dictated by potential future developments of the service such as development of hub and spoke models of care.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide an Oral Medicine service to patients particularly the non-surgical management of oral ulceration, inflammatory and infective disorders, white and red patches, vesiculobullous lesions, pigmentation, salivary gland disorders, and pain of the orofacial region.
  • To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care
  • To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training within Bristol Dental Hospital
  • To take leadership in audit programme in the department, Health and safety and clinical governance activities
  • To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service Development
  • Responsibilities in Primary Care Unit will include urgent care of patients requiring oral assessment and pain relief (1 session)
  • The post-holder will complement the existing Consultants in Oral Medicine by having a proven interest in these specific clinical areas. The post-holder will work with colleagues from other specialities and will include the following;
  • Provision of clinical teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level within a variety of clinical settings.
  • The post holder will primarily require demonstrable experience and expertise within the field of Oral Medicine to allow a degree of independent practise. They should also demonstrate sufficient experience to perform routine management of acute dental pain at a primary care level.
